This course introduces SQL using Microsoft SQL Server to demonstrate generic SQL commands that can be used with a variety of client/server database systems. Learn how to do ad-hoc queries on a database to select the information you need. Understand how to write select statements and use wildcards, logical operators, and calculated columns. Learn to eliminate duplicates and work with date data. Learn how to aggregate data as well as group data, order data, and generate totals. Topics include SQL syntax, data definition language, and data manipulation language.
Learn how to properly design a relational database and structure tables within the database. Learn the purpose of and how to specify primary and foreign keys. Understand the advantages of referential integrity and how it can affect data maintenance and prevent errors. Learn to plan and create tables and view table information. Understand how to create tables with column constraints and the value of column constraints. Topics include using ALTER TABLE to modify table structure, and creating and understanding the different types of indexes. Additional topics include saving updates to the database using COMMIT and ROLLBACK, copying data between tables, and using PIVOT to transform query results.
